Vivian: Does your existing study or job have any relevance to translation?
Shog: Not so much actually. But I’m interested in English study, so I keep watching original English movies, etc. And sometimes when I ran into some interesting subtitles, I’ll think about it for a better translation.
I am preparing for my graduation thesis recently, so I have to refer to some foreign papers, during which process I have to do some sort of translations, right? Haha.
It is always clear to me that the purpose of learning English is to use it rather than to show it off or something else.
Vivian: As a senior student in college, how do you compare yourself with other Translators who have years of experience？
Shog: I think experience is valuable in the translation field, I’m still fresh comparing with those experienced translators. What’s more, the project from the Client is quite different from daily translation practice. There will be something very professional which must be translated very accurately. In a word, I am just an amateur and still got a lot to do.
Vivian: Your translations have got 100% of positive feedback ratings from the clients. Can you share your experience with other translators on how you went about achieving it?
Shog: Frankly speaking, my clients are all very tolerant of my translation mistakes. As one client said, sometimes my translations may have some “tiny little mistakes”. I know that he is reminding me of being more careful later.
But I still have something to tell the other translators, especially to the fresh translators.
Firstly, doing projects is very different from daily translation practice, as I mentioned above;
Secondly, carefulness is a critical quality to a translator. You have to be careful while doing anything, and it’s particularly important while translating. When you are doing projects, you have to sit in front of your computer and deal with screens of texts. So you must be able to concentrate for a longer time so as to finish your job perfectly. The quality of translation is a translator’s biggest fame after all.
Finally, a translator has better know as much as he can. And make sure that you can use most of the ordinary software like ACROBAT READER, PHOTOSHOP, etc. so you can perfectly get your job done.
Vivian: Before your contact with Elanso, have you ever worked in any traditional translation company?
Shog: Before knowing Elanso, I basically knew nothing about translation field.
Vivian: Under the traditional translation setting, translators are thought as being a weak professional community. They need to pay intermediary or commission fees. Some even suffer the financial losses through prices compression or refusal of payment after the completion of the work. What is your view on this?
Shog: It’s a problem in the translation industry with my insufficient experience and some reading materials from the Internet. To solve this problem, I think both the translator and the client must have faith in each other. It is also very helpful to a third party platform like Elanso.
Vivian: What is the difference of the work flow between Elanso and the traditional translation agencies?
Shog: It makes the transaction safer when the translator and the client are doing business.
Vivian: Many translators feel that online translation is a complicated affair. What is your idea on this?
Shog: It’s as safe and convenient as buying things from the internet by Alipay. Haha.
Vivian: Have you ever thought of becoming a SOHO translator？
Shog: I’m still a senior student now, and I’ll do my graduate study. So I don’t think about this a lot. But I’ll be happy if I can enjoy the little achievement of English study in my spare time.
Vivian: You have translated many articles on Elanso, what’s the difference between the paid translation projects and the articles you translated on Elanso? What attracts you?
Shog: Translation community is a very good place for translators to communicate with each other. I translate the articles because they are very instructive and interesting. Furthermore, translating contexts of various topics can help me take projects. Of course, I’d like to make friends with the translators that comment on my translation.
