An 84.37 carat white diamond sold for just over 16 million dollars at auction here on Wednesday, Nov 14, 2007, making it the second most expensive such stone ever sold, auction house Sotheby's said.
The stone, described by Sotheby's as the "largest purest white flawless brilliant-cut diamond ever to appear at auction," fetched 18.2 million Swiss francs (16.1 million dollars, 13.0 million euros) at the sale in Geneva.
The price was towards the lower end of the 15-20 million Swiss franc range the auction house had set.
No details were immediately available on the buyer.
