Vivian:How long have you been a Translator?
Lusia:I began to work as a part-time translator four years ago after I took a job as a college English teacher upon graduation. Then I mostly worked for translation companies and sometimes helped my colleagues with the translation of books and papers. Last year I quitted my job for health reasons and stayed home for several months, during which I cultivated friendly cooperation with several translation companies and direct clients. My interest in translation and interpretation also intensified day by day, so I decided to start off my career as a Soho translator.
Vivian:Translation ability is not the only skill for a qualified translator. Compared with other translators, what are your advantages in this industry?
Lusia: Except for solid translation skills, accuracy and credibility also matter a lot. Sometimes I can spend half an hour just to look up a word or phrase, and mostly I will check the usage I find through pure English websites in Google to see whether it is commonly used in English-speaking countries. My “sternness” has won favor from many peer translators and clients. Besides, I can always send the translation to clients earlier or on time because I believe being punctual is crucial to building up credibility.
Vivian: How do you get to know Elanso? Recommended by your friend or from other ways?
Lusia:I got to know Elanso through the Internet. I always browse major translation-related websites and bbs to keep up with the latest development in the translation world. Elanso is among the existing translation witkeys of China listed in a post on FanE.cn, one of China’s largest translation bbs. I was immediately drawn to Elanso once I logged onto it.
Vivian:You have applied to be a VIP translator not long after you register with Elanso. What’s the attraction to you?
Lusia:The feature of VIP is very practical. It helps me stand out among the numerous translators registered at Elanso and brings more project opportunities. A VIP translator can quickly promote himself/herself to the center of the mass translator army.
Vivian:I observe that, you have completed 2 projects with the amount of over RMB 1,000 after you become a VIP Translator. Do you have any experience or ideas to share with us?
Lusia:I can only say I am lucky enough, hehe. Well, I have begun translation practices shortly after I registered at Elanso. The passages I worked out here convey my translation ability to clients. I also try to keep my computer online as long as possible, reading and learning from other’s translations, browsing the Circles I love, or simply listening to songs shared by other Elanso members. In such a relaxed and joyous atmosphere I elevate myself and win more chances.
Vivian:Have you ever worried that the payment you get from the project will be less than RMB 800?
Lusia:Not a bit! I discovered that most VIP translators of Elanso have received a lot of projects valuing much higher than 800 RMB. Besides, Elanso has recently promised to “compensate any price difference between membership and transaction”. You see, I have nothing to worry about.
Vivian:What is the difference of the work flow between Elanso and the traditional translation agencies?
Lusia:In traditional translation, translators can only talk to translation agencies about specific requirements, prices and deadlines. This can easily cause misunderstanding between translators and clients. Also, translators are deprived of a big part of their earnings. In contrast, at Elanso, translators and clients may talk directly to see whether they suit each other in terms of competency, price, time, etc. Before translators begin translation work, clients advance the payment to the account of Elanso, which guarantees the interests of both parties. In a word, I think Elanso is a convenient, efficient and safe online translation platform.
Vivian:Many translators feel that online translation is a complicated affair. What is your idea on this?
Lusia:Online translation is as simple as shopping at taobao and ebay. Of course, you should keep your information updated so as to present the freshest you to clients.
Vivian: What else do you expect from Elanso? Any suggestions for our services?
Lusia: My suggestions: Firstly, Elanso may consider holding translation contests on a regular basis. Elanso assign several passages and translator sign up voluntarily for the contest. Finally Elanso experts decide on the winners and give comments on the translations. This process can evoke translators’ activity, unearth translators with great potential, help clients know translators’ ability better and ultimately boost the development of a unique Elanso culture. Secondly, Elanso may consider adding a practice field for interpretation and recording. For instance, translators may choose a passage on Elanso to recite or interpret. Later translators upload the recordings onto Elanso so that clients and other translators can review the recordings for decision-making or mutual learning.v
