Cracked is a discontinued American humor magazine. Founded in 1958, Cracked proved to be the most durable imitator of the popular Mad Magazine. Cracked blatantly aped Mad's layouts and subject matter, and even featured a dumb, wide-jowled mascot named Sylvester P. Smythe on its covers (see Alfred E. Neuman). The Smythe character was Cracked's "janitor." An article on Cracked.com, the magazine's official website, explains that the magazine was "created as a knock-off of MAD magazine just under 50 years ago," and it "spent nearly half a century with a fan base primarily comprised of people who got to the store after MAD sold out."
Cracked's publication frequency was reduced in the 1990s, and was erratic in the 2000s. In 2006, the magazine was revived with a new editorial formula that represented a significant departure from its prior "Mad Magazine" style. The new format was more akin to "lad" magazines like Maxim and FHM. The new formula, however, was unsuccessful and Cracked again canceled its print magazine in February 2007 after three issues. As of 2009, the brand exists as a Web site.

By Christina HIf you gave any one of our big tech industries millions of dollars, a team of computer geniuses and cutting edge technology, they would probably waste it on AIDS vaccine research or nanocomputers or something. Hollywood will invest it in CG penis enhancement. The reason is sometimes hours of makeup and the perfect lighting still aren't enough to make some stars look like stars. Welco...

As a lifelong gamer, I’ve often been in the awkward position of defending my hobby to a roomful of sneering artsy types. Although, to be fair, I do attend a lot of wine and cheese mixers at the New Yorker offices. Nevertheless, it’s an experience we’ve all had to confront. Whether it’s coming from our parents, our local clergymen or the critical voices in our own head, at some point we’ve had to s...

March 8th, 2009 By: Michael SwaimSo, you’ve traveled back to the age of the dinosaurs, and monsters that time forgot (but nerds remember) are towering over you. What’s a scientist, bumbling lab assistant or transdimensional God-being to do?The important thing to remember is that ancient history is just like prison: to survive, you’ve got to either make someone your bitch, or become someone’s...

By Milo TaibiFor most of us, an apology actually means something. If you hurt somebody's feelings, laugh/throw things at a kid in a wheelchair or repeatedly violate a restraining order of a certain SOMEONE, you offer a heartfelt apology and move on with your life. But for famous types who have lawyers and publicists, the public apology becomes an important business strategy, with all sincerity str...
