Should CoTweet and Yammer Be Worried?

CenterNetworks -- Some of the big tech news this past week included two announcements. First, Salesforce announced that they will be offering a stream product in 2010. Second, the Twitter COO finally publicly noted that advertising and paid accounts will be coming to Twitter soon. Ive had several discussions and nearly every time the names of two startups are brought up as potentially in trouble with last weeks ann...     11-23

Twitter COO Costolo: Advertising Coming To Twitter Soon

CenterNetworks -- Twitter COO Dick Costolo was intererviewed today at the real-time crunchup event and part of the discussion centered around how Twitter will (and does) generate revenue. Clearly they are earning revenue from Twitters deals with Bing and Google. More importantly, Costolo noted that Twitter will launch an advertising model soon. He went on to say that soon means most likely early next year. He conti...     11-21

What’s Up With Yahoo Mail Delivery?

CenterNetworks -- I am a happy Yahoo Mail user. Ive been a Yahoo Mail user since the early days. I also know that I am a bad tech blogger and early adopter because I dont use (and make love to) Gmail. I regularly get noogies at tech conferences when others learn about my choice. Lately Ive noticed issues with email delivery to my Yahoo Mail account. Sometimes emails are delivered on time, but many are delivered lat...     11-20

Izea Adds Sandwich Disclosure Requirement

CenterNetworks -- Yesterday we took a look at two paid posts from British Airways run through the Izea SocialSpark program. One of the comments I made was around how the paid disclosure is referenced. Izea required that the paid post badge be added to the bottom of the post. My suggestion for clarity was to add a clear notice that the post is paid/sponsored at the top of the post. Last night I received an email fro...     11-18

Just What Did British Airways Buy?

CenterNetworks -- Ive flown on British Airways three times and all three flights went well. The last time on British Airways was in 2006 and was a short hop from Venice to London and I remember the crew making the trip smooth for someone who really doesnt enjoy flying. So it was a shock to learn that an airline that has a good reputation is buying reviews and paid posts. I decided to take a look at two posts, one f...     11-18

CityFlitz No Longer Solvent

CenterNetworks -- Earlier this month we reported on Canadian car sharing service CityFlitz as their website was removed and some customers were upset that they received no response to their customer service emails regarding their security deposits. The CityFlitz service concept offered car rentals for $1/hour (CAD) and the cars were wrapped with advertising. Today I noticed that the CityFlitz website is back with t...     11-18

“This Lottery Machine Gonna Get Someone Killed”

CenterNetworks -- Over the past month or so, New York State has started rolling out a new lottery machine at lottery retailers around the state. The old machines were in service for (as best as I can remember) at least 15 years. Ive also learned that the lottery in New York is the largest lottery in the U.S. From a customer perspective, the new machines are faster and use less paper than the old clunkers. The old l...     11-14

Let’s Watch Twitter Become FriendFeed

CenterNetworks -- It seems the hot Twitter news of the day is that the service might be slowing in U.S. growth. You can read the Twitter stats story on Mashable and TheNextWeb. Earlier in the week the big news for the so-called social media experts was the on and off status of the new retweet architecture system. Twitter turned it on for many users (I was not one of them) but then turned it off so they could fix so...     11-13

5 Things You Shouldn’t Do With a Satellite Connection

CenterNetworks -- As Ive mentioned a few times before, I am stuck with a satellite Internet connection at home. DSL and FIOS are distant fantasies, cable comes to the end of my driveway and stops (they refuse to run it any further, and wont let me run it myself) and a T1 line is just way out of my price range. So, Im stuck dealing with huge latency and bottom-of-the-barrel high speed Internet service. For everyone ...     11-13

CenterNetworks -- Last month, I was one of the startups that attended an event in NYC which offered a chance for startups to meet the tech press of NYC. While I was there I started to think about an idea that might help the startups by helping each other. Id like to share a rough sketch of the concept and would ask for your feedback if the idea has any merit. The concept is pretty simplea startup blog exchange. Nea...     11-12

Amazon S3 Hosts 82 Billion Objects

CenterNetworks -- Amazon CTO Werner Vogels has posted a chart (displayed below) of Amazon S3 storage usage over the past three years. The latest number for Q3 2009 is 82 billion objects inside of S3. Pretty amazing growth considering that the service was barely used in 2006. Early 2007 shows 2-3 billion objects. So many startups I talk to are using Amazons cloud computing services in some fashion. For example, Twit...     11-11

CenterNetworks -- Last year Google got cozy with the MTA with the launch of transit directions inside of Google Maps. There have been many mashups that created something similar in the past but now the subway lines are displayed directly on the map. So far I havent been a...     11-07
