What an episode!

The Party

Just another weekend on the Upper East Side… Fun and frolic at the pool - at school! Yep, someone took the key in order to break into the pool in order to have a little extracurricular fun. Most of the gang played along. Lots of drinking, drugs and some serious making out - including between Blair and Nate.

Serena asks Dan to the party. At first, he balks but Vanessa convinces him otherwise.

Dan and Vanessa show up just in time to witness a fellow student horsing around. The student loses his footing, hits his head and falls into the pool where he almost drowns. Emergency is called and consequences are to be expected.

New Headmistress

Back at school, the new headmistress at Constance Billiard cracks the whip. She first orders that they each write 10,000 words about “what the hell is wrong with you” - or how the party was initiated. The headmistress advises that she intends to conduct one on one interviews to ascertain who instigated the madness (like we don’t know). She claims that if if the culpable party doesn’t come forward, all of the attendees at the party will be expelled.

Undeterred, many of the class make a pact not to say a word. Dan worries about the consequences of not telling but Serena says that she will fix everything - noting that the headmistress wouldn’t really expel 2/3 of the junior class. Dan is not so sure and his father encourages him to tell if he knows something, advising that the others are only watching out for themselves.

The Interviews

Blair’s interview is first. She plays the perfect student and says that she doesn’t know who instigated the trouble.

Nate actually doesn’t know anything about the key - the one student who doesn’t. He finds the key in Blair’s desk and decides to offer himself up in order to save her. The headmistress asks him a number of questions that seems to indicate that she knows that he is protecting someone. He is suspended from school.

Dan’s interview does not go well. In the middle of the interview, Serena barges in.
Lily and Rufus

Lily pops in to see Rufus. Oh yeah, and to announce her engagement to Bart Bass. Rufus is clearly upset. He tells Lily that he isn’t surprised that she couldn’t give up the luxuries in her life. She throws his history of indecision back at him.

Later, Rufus comes to see Lily and asks her why she really came by to see him. He surmises that she was really looking for reasons not to marry Bart. He tells her to live her life for her, kisses her and leaves.

Later, when she is at lunch with Bart, she calls Rufus and makes a date. She wants to give the two of them another chance.

The fly in the ointment? Serena asks Lily not to reconcile with Rufus because of what it means to her and Dan. She notes that she would rather be Chuck’s step-sister than Dan’s.

Lily accepts Bart’s proposal (yeah, she lied earlier) and turns Rufus down.

The Film
Vanessa is being Vanessa and filming everything in an effort to win a grant. She shows Dan footage of Chuck with the key at the pool. Dan confronts Chuck about the key and they argue.

Later, Chuck argues again - this time with Blair. She taunts Chuck to tell Nate about their fling, claiming that Nate would never believe Chuck. Not to be one-upped, Chuck says that he has proof that Blair is lying. The proof? Vanessa catches their argument on film.

Blair tries to bully Vanessa into giving the tape to her but isn’t successful. Later, Chuck buys the tape from her for $1000. Is it just me or is anyone else wondering whether that was the actual tape?

My query is answered shortly when Vanessa brings the tape to Blair. She claims there are no copies. When Blair asks about the copy given to Dan, Vanessa tells her that it was a blank. Vanessa also tells Blair that Nate seems to really care about her.

Later, Blair pays Vanessa’s rent for the next year. She doesn’t like being indebted to anyone (or maybe, just maybe, she’s just a wee bit grateful).

The Culprit

After Nate gets suspended, Dan agains gets nervous. He tells Blair that he can’t get suspended or expelled and tells her that if she knows who was responsible for the break-in, she should tell the headmistress. She tells Dan that she was responsible. Serena tells Dan that she and Blair showed up at the pool for kicks and then the party got out of control. She also tells Dan that if she is suspended, she would not be able to get back to Constance Billiard or any other school.

The Confession

Serena confesses to breaking into the pool. She begs the headmistress to believe that she is a different person. Remarkably, she isn’t expelled. The headmistress tells her that she has chosen to use Serena as an example for the new honor code.

Serena tells Dan that she didn’t get any special privileges. He thinks differently.

Later, at her mother’s engagement party, Serena finds out that Bart Bass bought her out of trouble. She suddenly feels suffocated and goes to visit Dan.
Blair and Nate

Nate tells Blair that he took the fall for her. She tells him that she didn’t do it, that she was hiding the key for someone else. Nate confesses his love for Blair and she tells him to go. He is crushed.

Later, Blair asks Nate to come by. He says that nothing can tear them apart. She tells him that she loves him, always had, always will. Is she going to tell Nate about Chuck?
Soooo, what did you think?
