The world of mobile advertising is still evolving, and it seems no one has found the perfect model to follow yet. That means businesses are experimenting with a wide variety of advertising and marketing techniques on cell phones. Let’s take a look at some of the more interesting marketing tactics implemented on cell phones:
- SnapTell Inc. helped the Wine Enthusiast develop a cell phone marketing program that asked people to take a picture of the Wine Enthusiast’s newpaper ad with their cell phones to get a 15% discount at the Wine Enthusiast’s website.
- Single Touch Interactive Inc. will roll out a marketing campaign in February 2008 that will allow customers to activate coupons at drug stores and other retail chains by typing in ‘# SAVE’ on their cell phones while they’re in the store. The appropriate discounts will then be applied when the customer checks out at the cash register. No more clipping coupons then searching for them when you’re in line. It will all be done for you.
- Virgin Mobile offers a service called Sugar Mama to its users that enables customers to earn up to 75 minutes of free air time each month simply by watching ads or responding to surveys on their cell phones.
The potential for mobile marketing and advertising is virtually untapped and the opportunities are vast. Finding the right way to tap into that market is the challenge. It looks like some companies are finding clever ways to navigate the nuances of varied cell phone equipment and carriers to reach the 80% of Americans who currently use cell phones (according to Jupiter Research).
Have you heard of any other particularly interesting mobile advertising programs? Would you be willing to view ads in exchange for free minutes or ringtones?
