I’m a huge fan of Radiohead, the British alternative rockers who made the headlines last year for giving their latest album In Rainbows away virtually for free on the Internet.
There is a new album out now, but Radiohead have nothing whatsoever to do with it. Radiohead: The Best Of has been released by EMI, the record company that Radiohead split with to go on alone last year, and the band never sanctioned its release.
As underhanded as that may be, it has had one positive effect, getting Creep, the first ever Radiohead single, back in the British charts, and I am now taking the opportunity to revisit this classic track.
Listening to Creep now is kind of weird. It’s still a great track, but when you consider where Radiohead have gone since, with a much more inventive and alternative style, this song sounds positively normal and ordinary.
It’s rock at its best, with all the finest elements of heavy drums, kick-ass guitars in place, topped off with a strong if not slightly unusual front man in Thom Yorke.
The video is one to forget in all honesty. If you look at the majesty of No Surprises and Jigsaw Falling Into Pieces, the Creep video is just a colourful but ultimately forgettable promo clip.
