The White Tower is nearly a thousand years old, and a bit like most ageing film stars, it’s beginning to look its age. So it’s getting a makeover.
And rather nicely, I thought, instead of having one of those discreet pieces of scaffolding screened with a half-tone picture of the building behind, it’s gone modern stylee for the duration.
A competition was held for the picture that would cover the White Tower while it was being restored. Rydal Hanbury, of the Prince’s Drawing School, came up with this winner. And it’s a smasher - a slightly moody black and white panorama of London, with the White Tower rearing above.
Okay, you may be disappointed not to see the White Tower in its pristine beauty if you’re visiting London during the conservation period (work will carry on till 2010; the drawing will be up there all of this year). But the drawing does go a little way to making amends.
