‘America’s Next Top Model’ Recap
Episode 10.7 “If You Can’t Make it Here, You Can’t Make it Anywhere ”
Air Date: April 2, 2008
We’re getting down into the meaty part of America’s Next Top Model. Those who can pose are starting to stand out, and those who can’t better get practicing. Claire gives us the story of missing her little girl again. I know she does, but do we have to touch on it every episode. Tyra-mail arrives and the girls thing the challenge may have something to do with Broadway.
A fierce argument explodes between Fatima and Lauren over coffee. OK, and our girl Lauren gets downright hood on Fatima! I am cracking up. She looks like a crackpot and won’t stop shooting insults at Fatima. Things fizzle out when Lauren chunks a cup of coffee at Fatima. OK, so doesn’t throw it at her, but she gives her some coffee.
With the help of a Sprint GPS cell phone (how cool do those sound?!), the girls take off on a challenge through the streets of New York. This will be to the advantage of the girls who know NY like Claire and Lauren. Even Stacy-ann blurts out, “That is an amazing phone!” Usually this is just a plug for a product (which this is as well), but this phone is actually useful for the challenge. The team of Anya, Lauren, Fatima, and Kartyzna first hit the Shoshanna showroom, which is ran by Shoshanna Gruss, Jerry Seinfeld’s former flame. At Pamela Roland, Claire, Dominique, Whitney, and Stacy-ann, the girls are critiqued, and Whitney feels discriminated against because of her size. She looked amazing in the dress! I hope this one comment doesn’t shatter her confidence and send her packing. That always seems to happen with the token plus size contestant on America’s Next Top Model.
When the Whitney, Claire, Dominique, and Stacy-ann hit the Shoshanna showroom, Whitney’s confidence goes up when Shoshanna mentions that she uses different body types in her shows. The other team hits Pamela Roland, and Fatima has the opposite of Whitney’s problem. She’s too small for the clothes. The last place both team hit is the Alice + Olivia showroom, where the designer tells them to put some quirk into their walks. Overall, team one (Whitney, Claire, Dominique, and Stacy-ann) wins and Stacy-ann books the most jobs.
The winning team gets to appear in a Seventeen beauty shoot.
OK, let’s address Lauren’s walk.
Lauren, get some heels and walk around the house all day! This is going to hold her back in the long run, if she keeps tromping along like a horse!
The day of the shoot, the girls meet Jay Manuel at a studio and discover they’ll be photographed from below on a mylar panel that is splashed with water. I don’t know how this idea came about, but it looks sort of lame. We’ll judge once the pictures are in front of us. The concept seems to be from Fuerza Bruta, an off-Broadway play (more on that later). Claire takes the plunge first…literally. She jumps in and smashes her face into the panel. Jay lets Claire take a bit to gather herself, and puts Dominique in front of the camera next. She looks amazing, and “like a ballerina.” Katarzyna gets another makeover, and the hair stylist chops her hair off and she’s in tears. What is it about hair? Us girls with long hair just can’t let go of it, can we?
Whitney looks amazing in her shoot, and I love that she smiles. It’s sexy and interesting in a room full of girls who look like they’re more depressed than Elliot Spitzer during his crisis. Back at the house that night, the girls rehash the shoot and Dominique, as Miss-Know-It-all as ever, declares that the girl who couldn’t get the shoot will definitely be the one going home. We know who that poor girl is: Claire. We’ll see if Dominique is right.
Claire’s picture doesn’t look terrible, but it isn’t a standout either. Same with Stacy-ann. The girls seem to have an issue showing their faces at a distinct angle. Katarzyna looks great with a stunning profile. Whitney’s picture looks like a fetus, but in a stunning away. Dominique’s shot is great because it’s showing some expression and not so safe. Lauren’s photo looks like something in W magazine…just a fluid photo with no one focal point. Fatima’s shot is OK, as is Anya’s, although the judges really love Anya’s. I think it looks a little too wide-eyed. She looks scared.
In deliberation, the judges are a little brutal. Whitney is praised, as is Fatima. Katarzyna is gorgeous, but the judges want to see her more of her personality. Lauren is criticized for her walk and her lack of confidence. I hope she does something about this quick because I SOOO don’t want to see her go home. She’s gorgeous in photographs, but she has to learn to control those limbs!
Fatima is the first name called, and of course, Tyra has to remind each girl what they’re still in the running for. Does she seriously have to do this?
It’s down to Claire and Lauren in the bottom two. I really don’t want either girl to go home. I know Stacy-ann booked the most jobs, but for me, she’s forgettable. Same with Anya.
Lauren stays! Claire gets the boot because her pictures are good, but they’re all the same. I agree with this, although I loved Claire’s personality. Her goodbye is heartfelt and sweet, but the show must go on. I can only hope someone who can walk is kind enough to take Lauren under their wing and teach her a thing or two about controlling her lanky body.
Seven girls remain in the house, and next week we’ll see Fatima deal with legal issues and Lauren have a severe accident in the kitchen. And I’m sure there will be a photoshoot or two as well.
