I Saved 24% Off My Electricity Bill By Making Only One, Very Simple Change:

Translate Into: Bilingual & Comments

By Carole Fogarty,

Body wisdom: When learning new things the brain uses up a lot of water. Drinking extra water helps hugely in the learning process. Schools have reported great success. A note from me today over at Twitter

Natural Wisdoms: A Regular Feature:

Aprils monthly dare was - I dare you to switch it off and save money. For the last two months that’s exactly what I have been doing, and I am thrilled to report that by simply flicking everything electrical off at the wall (when not in use) I saved 24% off my electricity bill. Yeah!

After these fabulous results, I expect the savings to increase to around 30% with our next electricity bill, as I’m sure we will become more consistent as a family at switching things off. It took a little while for us all, as a family, to find our “switch it off” groove.

Research on the internet claimed I would save between 15% - 40%

In my original post I shared that research varied on the net considerably, suggesting that our electrical things still consumed anywhere between 15% - 40% when left on stand by mode.

This includes all things on your kitchen bench such as toaster, microwave and kettle, your laundry including the washing machine and dryer, mobile phone chargers (which my kids always seem to leave plugged in and turned on at the wall even if they are not charging a phone…. go figure) and the more obvious TV, game consoles, CD players, computer, printers, lamps and sound systems.

For my household there were 10 electrical items in total which I switched off at the wall when not in use, all of which are mentioned above.

This is a relatively easy way to save money once you create the new habit and get into the rhythm of it, not to mention the enormous health benefits to our planet earth and environment.

I Dare You To Switch It Off and Share Your Results:

If you are up for the challenge I would love you to share your results here:

1 - Number of items switched off

2 - Savings recorded

Compare the bill to a period with similar usage. e.g I didn’t compare the savings to my immediately previous bill as it was summer and we used the fans a lot, however the billing period prior was much the same as the previous 3 months as no extra heating or cooling was used.

I look forward to hearing back from those of you keen to participate in this little experiment.

Thanks for reading this post, Carole.
