(www.businessandblogging.com) Probably not yet. . .
Neither do mine.
As a business blogger, it’s important to match your use of social media to your target audience. If your marketing plan includes microblogging, then you should be interested in who is using those tools.
With that in mind, I set out to find some statistics on who, exactly, is using the popular new microblogging platforms, Twitter and Plurk.
I started out by asking my own teens.
“Have you ever heard of a website called Twitter?”
“No, Mom. No”
“What about one called Plurk? It’s a way to send messages.”
“No Mom, I just use Facebook, that’s all.”
After that highly unscientific inquiry, I decided to seek out some more unbiased sources.
There’s not much out there and I have no idea of how accurate these posts are, but here’s what other bloggers are saying about the microblogging demographic:
- “The average Twitter age is 37 with 150 responders” - from a post by Zena Weist of Nothin’ but SocNET
- This post by Max Freiert at Compete, however, paints an entirely different picture. Max shows heavy usage of Twitter by those who are of college age through the early 40s with another significant spike in usage by the 55 to 66 year old age group.
Finding demographics for Plurk was even more difficult.
An important thing to realize as a business blogger is that, regardless of the real numbers, microblogging is on the increase. According to information from a post by Michael Arrington at Techcrunch, Twitter is growing very rapidly.
What this fact means to the business bloggers is that, while your target demographic may not be using Twitter or Plurk today, they very well might be using these tools in the near future.
What do you think?
Who are the microbloggers and why are they doing it?
Does microblogging figure into your future marketing plans? Why, or why not?
