A new study suggests a girl’s view of her popularity may affect her health. In a study regarding obesity, researchers found that after two years, girls who felt they weren’t very popular gained more weight then girls who felt they were more popular.
There are some flaws in the study. For example, the girls provided their own weight and height rather than the researchers measuring the girls themselves. However, Clea McNeely of Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health believes the study is strong.
We already know how important it is for our girls to have self-respect and high self-esteem. This study shows it not only helps them emotional, but physically as well. If a girl perceives herself poorly it could be the start of a lifetime of obesity and other medical conditions.
