Jack McManus is a new British singer/songwriter who is currently making waves with his blend of fell good Pop music. This song, Bang On The Piano, is his début, with his album, Either Side Of Midnight out in the UK as well.
He’s been compared to Elton John and Ben Folds, and I can see why, although his musical style differs greatly from Elton in particular, with the piano being the only real similarity.
It’s a weird first single as it kind of harks back to an older style of music while managing to feel bang up to date. That’s a hard thing to pull off, but he does so brilliantly.
The song moves along at a great pace, keeping up the levels of interest from beginning to end, and with a chorus that’s as catchy and sing-alongable as any I’ve heard in a long while.
The video is simple, but effective. Basically showing McManus performing the song sat at his piano, various techniques are used to add interest. I love the way the piano changes size and takes on a personality of it’s own toward the end.
McManus looks like having a great future ahead of him, although I’d love him to get rid of the perm, and the annoying little cartoon on the piano. Other than that, brilliant stuff.
