I’m not the kind of girl who has to have Riedel and a perfect white backdrop to enjoy a good bottle of wine. It can be drunk out of plastic glassware on a slightly rough picnic table by the light of a Coleman lantern. Saturday after work, I drove to a campsite at Lake Chabot. All I had to worry about was salad dressing and wine. Since it was dark when I arrived, BK already had everything set up with a nice fire going. While I opened the wine and prepared the salad, he put the lamb chops on the grill, with portabella mushrooms, onions, and asparagus ready to follow. I had chosen the 2002 Rosenblum Cellars Fran’s Vineyard Syrah from Rockpile, which became available when we had a library party. I was too hungry to take notes, but I remember it being richly smooth, with smoky dark fruit and meaty flavors—perfect with the lamb. It might even have gone well with the S’mores we made later, but there wasn’t any left.
