No More Military Base Mapping, Says Pentagon

AP reports that the Pentagon has banned Google from making detailed street level maps of US military bases. Reason? Images of Fort Sam Houston base in Texas ended up on Google Maps. The vantage point is probably different, but I’m quite sure that this is the base in question. BTW, if I may digress take a stab at ‘traditional’ journalism, which I’m still half part of, it’s funny how no major news site took the time to find the link and the image. (*update: apologies to BBC, they updated their article with imagery. Score 1 for the “old” media)

Larry Yu, a spokesman for Google said that the filming was a mistake. “It is against our policy to request access to military bases for the purpose of capturing imagery in Street View,” he said. The imagery that was causing trouble for the US military apparently showed the location of the guards and other intricate details that shouldn’t be public; according to Google, it was promptly removed from the site. Are you sure, guys? I can still virtually drive around that base quite comfortably.
