Holy smokes, kids. I just got emails dropped in my normally quiet inbox from both Robert over at IESB and Frosty at Collider regarding a press conference they both attended this afternoon with Iron Man director Jon Favreau and comics legend Stan Lee. The two had come together to promote the release of Iron Man on DVD and Blu-ray on September 30th.
Of course, no Jon Favreau appearance before the press will be complete these days without some back and forth about Iron Man 2, especially now that Favs has officially begun working on the project. And though the project is still in the writing stages, Favreau did talk a bit about a few things that he might like to do, should the budget work out. One thing he mentioned specifically was IMAX; calling the IMAX footage from The Dark Knight a “game changer,” he said that he’d love to shoot part of Iron Man 2 in IMAX. As well, he also said that he might be interested in going to the realm of 3D. He talked about how cool it would be to get to see Iron Man’s armor in 3D.
According to Collider’s report, he was still very hush about story details, though he did make mention of the Mandarin, as well as promise that the sequel will contain more surprise appearances, one way or another, from other comic book characters. He also talked briefly about keeping Iron Man “light and fun” as well as bringing Terrance Howard back, schedule permitting, to play Jim Rhodes once again. And while he made no confirmations, he did give the impression that we would be seeing War Machine in the sequel.
Of course, none of this is set in stone — Favs and writer Justin Theroux will still have to knock out a script and Kevin Feige, Avi Arad and the Marvel Studios crew will have to give them the money to do what they want — but its progress. And while I am not sold on 3D as anything other than a marketing gimmick, I would very much like to see Favreau take Iron Man to IMAX. There was a clear difference in the experience between seeing The Dark Knight in IMAX and on a regular screen, and Iron Man is just the sort of property that could work in a very similar way.
