Mochila and Innovation: New Video Player and Comments on Reuters API

Translate Into:

Mochila isn’t announcing a new partner (per say), but the new player has kicked in a lot more functionality. This new player, version 2.0, offers multiple related videos within the same player, making its content availability far broader and more valuable to site publishers, readers, and advertisers alike. This brings in some traditional media consumption features for Mochila, making its new player more akin to a television with channels that offer a variety of content from multiple news sources.

Now, while there’s no new content providers for Mochila to announce for this particular release, there is a partner that has signed on to use the new Mochila player. Topix, the news aggregation site, has begun to utilize the new Mochila player added content on its own site, extending Mochila’s reach and widening its ad network potential.

Next Phase: Innovate

It’s interesting that Mochila has reached a point with its content provider partners that it can step back and pour some resources into improving some of its existing widgets. What’s good about this is that it breeds innovation necessary for Mochila to remain focused in its goals, while improving the quality of its own distribution methods.

Equally as interesting is Mochila’s timing in its announcement for its new video player, which comes a day after our coverage of the new Reuters API for enabling third-party developers to freely utilize its content. I took the opportunity to ask Mochila CEO Keith McAllister what he thought of Reuters’ API, even though it seemingly doesn’t compete with a service like Mochila.

McAllister, who is quite familiar with Reuters as a publisher and has cultivated his own relationship with the service for Mochila as a distribution partner, responded as such:

I don’t know a lot about Reuters’ API initiative but it makes sense to me and is certainly a reflection of a company full of smart people working to innovate. The only thing I know for sure is that no one knows what the future of distributed content looks like. So innovation and experimentation are an imperative to companies trying to transition from the way syndication’s been done for more than a century and what comes next.”

I’m inclined to agree with McAllister, as the market is clearly seeking new ways in which to distribute, consume and monetize content. Even though the response from some of the developer community was less than stellar, as reflected in the comments stream from my coverage of the Reuters API, I think that an ongoing conversation between developers, Reuters and third parties like Mochila will only help improve the overall methods for interacting with content across the board.
