This episode is about three weeks old. The models weren’t required to do the typical catwalk thing, and instead were required to work it at New York fashion week. This is pretty major for an aspiring model, and contrary to popular belief, it isn’t the pinnacle of one’s career as a top model, it certainly is a strong stepping stone to taking one’s career to new heights. This was the first episode I’d seen of the show, so I wasn’t really familiar with the contestants, or the judges. Other than Tyson and Nikki Taylor (who was my idol growing up; she was spectacular in those old school CoverGirl ads, no?), there’s a guy from New York Model Management, as well as an A-list casting director who casts for all of the top shows in New York. Good panel, imho. One thing I immediately saw was that the show seems very staged. All in all, I have only seen three episodes of this show, so maybe I’m missing something, but I think that’s ample time to make this call. Nikki’s words always seem insanely scripted, and even when the contestants do the little snippet interviews between scenes, it seems as if they’re going off of a script. This has leaked into many reality shows in the past few years, and it really makes watching the shows a downer because we aren’t idiots: we can easily see when people aren’t keeping it real.
The girls walked in the FORM fashion show, which was held off site (not at Bryant Park). They didn’t say where the show was held, but often smaller designers show at galleries or a penthouse, and wherever this show was held was bright with tons of light, making for a great fashion show setting. Holly won the most accolades from the designer, and was told she would have been booked on spot.
The guys walked the R. Scott French show, whose director of the show made a really witty statement: “If they’re nervous, it might come across as uncertain.” Um…OK. I thought that’s what being nervous was?
Ronnie got the crappy end of the stick again and was told that his look was too safe and Middle America. Great, but the poor guy can’t exactly reconstruct his face, so give him advice he can actually use! Ben won immunity, so he was safe for this episode as well as the next (rather generous of them, no?) and Perry was ridiculed for coming off as “too confident,” which I can agree with. Jackie got the ultimate insult when it was noted by the judges from the designer that she would be “good for swimsuit.” Ouch! As an aspiring high fashion model, this is the ultimate blow, but besides this, I think Jackie is just plain ugly. Her face is hardly interesting, and sure her body is long and thin, but if she doesn’t know how to utilize it, it won’t sell clothes at the end of the day.
In the bottom three were Ronnie, Katy and Frankie (who I LOVE!, if only for his insane personality).
Poor Katy was called out by Casey who took the opportunity to rat her out to the judges, running down her daily routine of too much sleep and (gasp!) carb consumption. Katy is a little….er…soft, in comparison to the other models, but besides that, she lacks height, as well as a striking look. A pretty face is a pretty face, but having a distinct look is what it really takes to brings in the ad campaigns and haute couture shows in the world of modeling.
