Bug Labs has a treat for early adopters, and it’s being announced at CES, which has started today. It’s the pricing. As the most popular question most ask of Bug Labs, it’s high time the company address its pricing model. As you may recall, Bug Labs is taking the development of gadgets (real, tangible gadgets) in a new direction by creating a system where developers can create their own electronic devices based on a set of functional modules. Such shifts in paradigms and processes need early adopters, and even they can require a bit of nudging. So to that end, Bug Labs is presenting the Early Adopter Discount, rewarding them with a discount of at least 13% off all products for the first 60 days of sales. From Bug Labs:
* BUGbase - $349 ($299 w/discount)
* LCD module - $119 ($99 w/discount)
* GPS module - $99 ($79 w/discount)
* Camera module - $79 ($69 w/discount)
* Motion detector / Accelerometer - $59 ($49 w/discount)
There will be an additional discount to customers who purchase the base plus all four modules, which Bug Labs will announce on the 21st.
It may not be warehouse, bulk pricing, but it should help you get your foot in the door. As with many other companies that are creating new platforms for developers to work with, the involvement of early adopters is crucial for development and consumer purposes. Every large company, from Microsoft to Adobe, works closely with early adopter developers for this very reason.
And Bug Labs isn’t stopping there. The company is also reaching out to the education sector, offering an additional pricing program called BUG+EDU. This will promote BUG to educational institutions and individual students, which is another good arena for raking in developers and early adopters. To this end, I expect we’ll see some contests in the near future to encourage even more participation?
Still moving forward, 2008 seems to be year of action and not just presentations on the conceptual case instances behind Bug Labs. The online store will be open for business on Jan. 21st, where you can pre-order for the BUGbase and all four BUGmodules. Orders will be fulfilled on or before March 17th domestically, with international ordering being supported later on this year.
