39 year old Kathy wants to get back on the dating scene, but I think it’s going to be near impossible when she’s running around in too-tight jeans, and frumpy t-shirts and blouses. Her best friend Carrie has nominated Kathy because she think it’s time for Kathy to start dating. In the interviews, Kathy’s own brother refers to her style as, “butch.” Harsh…if that’s not the look you’re going for. Stacy and Clinton surprise Kathy and giver her the lowdown on the makeover. Kathy seems pretty enthused about the change, and says she’s thankful that her family nominated her…this looks like it’s going to be an easy one.

Going over the footage, it’s clear that Kathy needs a lot of help. She lives in athletic sneakers, old faded t-shirts, and beat-up pumps. Kathy says that she’s lost her confidence because of failed relationships. They go through Kathy’s wardrobe to find the oldest clothes and shoes, most of which are covered in dust! While you may not have the nicest or most expensive clothes, surely you take care of them better than this! Into the bin go hiking boots, a hideous red puffy vest, and a pea soup-colored cardigan. There’s nowhere to go but up at this point.

Next up is the dreaded 360 mirror, everyone’s favorite part of What Not to Wear. Kathy is still ready for the makeover, although she seems sort of OK with the looks she’s chosen for the 360 mirror. Kathy says she hasn’t felt pretty or sexy in quite some time, and needs some help getting there. When she goes shopping, Kathy has to keep in mind saturated colors, straight leg jeans, dresses/skirts, and jackets.

Off she goes into New York City armed with the What Not to Wear $5000 Bank of America card, and Stacy and Clinton’s ideas floating through her head. When nothing is fitting correctly in the clothing department, she goes for shoes. She buys a whopping nine pairs! Good for her! Shoes always make a cloudy day better, no? At the next stop purchases a Pucci-esque pink sundress. After a really bad shopping experience, Stacy and Clinton head Kathy’s way to help her shop ’til she drops and do it in the right way. Stacy chooses soft colors and banded waists for Kathy, and the first dress Kathy tries on looks great with her. Added to the burgundy dress are a gold dress coat, a bronze patent bag, and black round toe pumps. Voila! Gorgeous and oh-so-easy to wear.

Next up is hair and makeup, where the hairstylist gives it a dark red wash and a significant trim. It’s a polished, soft bob that flatters Kathy’s face and make her look feminine and flirty. The makeup artist shoes Kathy how to take her look from day to night in a flash, and will give her a boost of confidence. With primer, foundation, a bit of eyeliner and white shadow give Kathy a clean day look. Add black liquid liner right at the lash line, and a smudge of dark plum eye shadow to create a sultry night look that make Kathy’s green eyes pop like crazy. Kathy is floored when she sees the night look, and I love her excitement!

Kathy tries on her three looks and looks amazing in all of them. From the printed halter dress to the emerald green banded blouse, Kathy looks like a totally different person not to mention at least 10 years younger! She seriously looks like her own younger sister!

At the big reveal, Kathy’s friends and family go crazy! Her son is especially touching when he says he can tell her mom has a ton more confidence and he’s happy she won’t trot around town showing off her midriff. After this, Kathy takes off the a meet-and-mingle to land a new guy with her new look…not to mention her new attitude!
