For an all Organic Formula, Baby, Thats Sweet Thinking she is making a healthy choice for her baby, the New York Times headlines a story about a yoga mom who didnt realize the organic infant formula she chose contains cane sugar. The post reveals this mum is not alone. Millions of Americans have been purchasing Similac Organic Formula, as proven by the 10 million dollars in sales of the infant formula as well as the capturing of 36% of the organic formula market in 2007. Parents are choosing to feed their babies organic more often these days, but it seems babies might prefer this infant formula because it is sweeter than most. Similac Organic is the only formula on the market sweetened with cane juice (sucrose), which is much sweeter than most other sweeteners used. While no health issues have been reported with Similac Organic, doctors warn babies can become accustomed to sweet tastes encouraging over eating and rejection of foods that are blander. Manufacturers of the formula claim sucrose is approved by the FDA, and that some type of sugar is needed in all infant formulas in order to break down the proteins in both cows milk and soy. University of Rochester Study Finds Nearly a Third of New Parents Know Little about Infant Development New parents do everything they can to prepare for the new, life-changing arrival of their newborn. Even with all the books, magazines, and websites offering parenting advice and tips, it seems many Americans still fall short on what to expect from their baby. Mum Mums explains a new University of Rochester study found parents have a lot to learn. Researchers provided mothers and fathers of 10,000 9 month old babies asking about 11 questions on developmental milestones like teething and potty training. One in 3 parents answered 4 or fewer questions correct, which researchers deemed as having low parenting knowledge. The surveys were compiled with videos of families participating in interactive activities such as reading books and playing games. Surprisingly, 31.2% of parents had a low level of what to expect from their babies. Low parental knowledge was associated with parental income and education level, yet even when those variables were accounted for in the study, the knowledge level of parents was still under par. Healthy child development requires a lot of interaction from parents, and the researchers warn this lack of knowledge may hurt babies in the long run. Researchers hope the study will increase awareness of the need for parenting education classes and hope to work alongside pediatricians to provide such knowledge.
