Baby’s development 12 months of milestones

Translate Into:

Baby DevelopmentYour baby is developing more ability to make purposeful movements with large, or gross, muscles. She will learn to roll from her back to her stomach and hold her own head up and sit with little or no support. While lying on her stomach, she will “creep” by pulling herself with her arms and pushing with her legs. She will learn to crawl and may pull herself up using furniture for support.

Here you will find a “month by month” guide to your baby development. Starting from two months up to four month old, babies develop at different stages so this is just a basic development guide to show you what you should be expecting to see your baby do each month.

TWO MONTHS

By the end of 2 months, your baby will typically:

  • Smile in response to your smile.
  • Lift his head about 45deg when placed on his tummy.
  • Roll over (one way).
  • Start to coo or vocalise with noises other than crying eg aah or ooh.
  • Bring both his hands together and also up to his face.
  •
    THREE MONTHS

By the end of three months, your baby will typically:

  • Raise his head and chest when put on his tummy.
  • Push down hard with his legs when placed on a hard surface.
  • Develop better hand-to-eye coordination.
  • Become more vocal, squealing with delight and trying to mimic sounds.
  • Begin to realise that his cries evoke a response. You will soon know which cries mean I’m tired, Feed me, or Change me.

     FOUR MONTHS

By the end of four months, your baby will typically:

  • Lift his head by 90deg.
  • Enjoy listening to you read, particularly nursery rhymes and songs.
  • Sit with support.
  • Explore objects like a rattle or his fist with his mouth.
  • Learn that by changing the shape of his mouth, he can make different noises: he may find it
  • amusing to blow bubbles or make raspberry sounds.
  • Be able to bear weight on his legs when held upright.
