(www.businessandblogging.com) It’s interesting to me that as we’ve been debating this week on whether or not “stock posts” are a legitimate form of business blog posts, I’ve been simultaneously reading Jon Wuebben’s book Content Rich: Writing Your Way to Wealth on the Web
I can’t know for sure Jon’s view on the subject (if you’re reading this, please feel free to join in the debate, Jon!) but I would expect that he would be less than enthusiastic about the idea. Jon’s book is all about writing interesting, exciting and distinctive content for all of your web pages, not just your blog. He highlights how to get search engines and human beings interested in reading your content.
Jon touches on all aspects of web copywriting from home pages to about pages to press releases to articles. He devotes an entire chapter to blogs and has some strong opinions on the subject.
1) Don’t be boring. “There really aren’t any hard and fast rules about what you can blog about. The important thing is similar to being a guest on a talk show: you need to be interesting or at leat not boring. Think thought provoking. You want to get a reaction out of someone or out of groups of people. ”
2) Don’t be a ‘me too’ blog. “If you commit to writing blog copy that can benefit your business make sure it is high quality….one of your blog goals should be to grow your user base. The more people that read your blog, the more online influence you can have and eventually - the more sales you can acquire.”
3) Remember, it’s about community. “Blogs are really great for another big reason: consumers end up buying from your compnay not because of you so much, but because of what other consumers are saying about your product or service, in the blog. ”
Although I can’t help but liking Jon’s philosophy of blogging, I also enjoyed the practical aspects of his book - how to do Key Word research effectively, how to write Search Engine Optimized copy, how and when to outsource SEO copywriting and even advice on SEO Copywriting as a career.
And in the final chapter, Jon gives no less than 16 specific steps to take to analyze your copy, evaluate your competition and write more effectively and more efficiently for your site.
If you’re interested in learning more, I recommend reading this book and checking out John’s blog: Content Rich.
