Weekly Roundup: Driven to Pigjacking, Murdoch Pays His Tuition, China Mobile Knows All, Lessons in Appropriate Transportation

Translate Into:

With so much going on in China, and only a limited amount of bandwidth, I have created this weekly post to highlight articles that I feel are (1) important, (2) relevant, and (3) interesting.

This week there are 4 articles that I have put into the mix, and the topics this week range from stealing pigs to politicians being told a bicycle is not an appropriate means of transportation when attending a conference.

Each are quite interesting, they are all relevant, and I hope you enjoy the articles

If you have an article that you feel needs to be mentioned, please do so in the comments section. We all have different areas of interest and bandwidth, so I hope you will take some time and post those articles!

This Little Piggy Shortage
For the last 9 months, the price of pork has been rising. It is rooted in the fact that Chinese consumers are eating more meat than ever before (65% of meat consumed is pork), and was exacerbated by a disease that wiped out a large amount of stock. For some people, this is an opportunity to Pigjack farmers and make a little money through a black market of pork. This is a fantastic story that just shows how silly some folks can get when they go pork crazy, but where I feel this story is important is that we are now beginning to see the real impact of inflation, and the fact that a black market has obviously formed.

Murdoch’s China dream shattered
For those who think that knowing the Chinese culture is a critical component of doing business in China, and that only having trusted advisors in China is a critical component of doing business in China, Rupert Murdoch is the example that shatters both myths. A very interesting article that looks at Murdoch’s timeline in China, and how even with a Chinese wife, and a smart son, his investments in China have largely failed to payout.

China’s mobile network: a big brother surveillance tool?
A story getting a lot of interest, but one that I think in the grand scheme of things is more media pumping than anything else. Why do I say that? Because mobile phone or not… they already know where you live…. (insert Dr. Evil laugh here).

Guards judge people by the transport they use
The concept of face, and appearing proper, is something that permeates worldwide, and this story is only all the more humorous because he must be the only government official not padding the Buick budget. Although the story is encouraging in at least one way. the head of the environmental institute was on an energy efficient bike.
