Consistent with earlier reports, November was a solid month for bookstore sales. Overall, sales rose 7.5%, to $1.19 billion, according to estimates from the U.S. Census Bureau.
The November increase was at a higher rate than gains for the entire retail segment which only increased 6.7%.
Authors, retailers and publishers will hold their breath for December’s numbers which will determine exactly how much of an increase book sales enjoyed for the year. Through November, they were up almost 5% - a decent climb in the midst of what many are calling a recession.
