仔细想来，我们每天好像都会听到类似不着边的“胡言乱语”，比如，布什就喜欢讲“伊拉克战争是正义之战”、“要把伊拉克变成一个民主的国家”之类的鬼话。很凑巧，俚语“famous last words”（讥讽别人无知时常用语“鬼话、一派胡言”）最初就是讽刺某些国家颇为滑稽的战争理由。一战时，一些国家当时的战争宣言是“为结束战争而参战”。当然，脑袋清醒的人都知道那是骗人的鬼话。于是，人们就讥讽这样的“蠢话、胡言”为“famous last words of history”，后来干脆就直接叫“famous last words”。

此外，“famous last words”也常用来讽刺政客的冠冕堂皇之辞，比如，听到美国所谓的“We must make the world safe for democracy（我们一定要让世界变得民主和平）”，我们就可回应“Famous last words！”（鬼话！）。
