If you’ve ever had shingles (herpes zoster) then you know that it has got to be one of the most uncomfortable viruses ever to hit. Between the pain and itching, and the overall feeling lousy - there’s nowhere to hide. Can you tell that I’ve had it too? To make things worse, many people who have shingles, develop postherpetic neuropathy, a chronic nerve pain that lasts long after the shingles lesions have gone away. Although there is now available a shingles vaccine, there is hope for those who develop shingles, not having been vaccinated. Anti-viral drugs are available and can be effective when taken soon enough after the shingles lesions are spotted. The problem is, most people with shingles either don’t recognize it (as I didn’t) or don’t bother going to a doctor because they feel that there isn’t anything that can be done.
