If TMZ Jumped Off a Bridge, Would MySpace Do It, Too?

Translate Into:

myspacecelebritylogoMySpace hasn’t been sitting in the most flattering of spotlights lately. For the last few days, the company has been forced to revisit an episode involving a Ms Megan Meier, a teenager taunted last year by a schoolmate’s deceptive parent to the point of suicide. (Just hours ago, a federal grand jury subpoenaed the social networking service in an investigation having to do with Meier’s case.)

So how ‘bout we do a little balancing act for you all? Or at least try to.

Today we bring you word that MySpace has launched a new celebrity channel. What’s it got, you ask? Guess.

Yes, among the network’s 110 million users (somehow that figure seems largely exaggerated, but okay, we’ll run with it), pages have been created over the last few years to pay tribute to the likes of Paris Hilton, Britney “Train Wreck” Spears, Zach Braff, Leo DiCaprio, among many, many others. Now there’s a place to find ‘em all. More easily, anyway.

What’s the purpose of this new sub-site? We’re assuming it’s to compete with the standard set of magazines and tabloids which make the rounds of the celebrity world – particularly TMZ and that Perez Hilton oddity. People.com is exempt from the target list, however. MySpace has put together a nice little content deal with that publication. Getty Images, too.

Of course, regardless of any of the abovementioned partnership, one shouldn’t expect to see MySpace Celebrity evolve into something extraordinarily popular anytime soon. Despite the heavy traffic that MySpace endures every moment of every day, its aggregation of various celebrity shrines and the odd Hollywood scoop isn’t likely to garner heaps of attention. It’ll get traffic, for sure. But we’re thinking that TMZ has hardly registered this little blip of a launch on its own radar.

Which is too bad, really. How great would it be if TMZ headed downward as a result of this news? US Weekly, too. And the rest of those sites that can best be described as fetishistic trash.

It is believed that Mr Glazowski has expressed enmity for his overlords’ assignment of this story as part of his daily ration, and has thus spoken ill of the fine citizens/entertainers of Los Angeles County - and the “people” which fanatically follow their kind.)
