Since I’ve talked a bit about new year’s goals, here’s some more that I’d like to implement this year. I’d like to become a more environmentally-conscious homemaker.

Jeanne Besser’s 10 easy steps to go green in your kitchen is a great list to post on my refrigerator as a reminder all throughout the year. In summary:

1. Say goodbye to bottled water. Whenever you go out, fill a reusable bottle with water from your tap and take that with you.

2. Buy locally grown produce from a farmers’ market.

3. Reduce your use of disposable tableware and paper towels.

4. Buy products with minimal packaging. Choose vegetables in bins, instead of prepackaged precut servings.

5. Use reusable tote bags when shopping, instead of plastic or paper.

6. Grow something, whether herbs or a full garden, at home.

7. Eat less meat. Substitute soy products or mushrooms for some meals a week.

8. Use appliances efficiently. Examples are running only full loads in the dishwasher and washing machine.

9. Eat out less often, and cook more meals at home.
