Joy Douglas is a salon owner in Boulder, Colorado. For the past four years she has been coloring her poodle Cici’s fur pink to help raise awareness for breast cancer. But she’s not using dye, claiming she gets the bright pink by using canned organic beet juice.
However, Boulder City is claiming this is a violation of a city code: “No person shall dye or color live fowl, rabbits, or any other animals” and after numerous warnings has issued a $1000 fine.
What do you think? I’m conflicted - I don’t think the dog is being hurt or forced to undergo any kind of traumatizing procedure (and I think it looks cute on her) and get the feeling that the law was probably aimed at abused wildlife, but then again if you’ve already gotten several warnings I think I’d be looking for a different way to express support for her cause.
