The Wall Street Journal has a very entertaining review of James Frey’s latest Los Angeles based whopper ‘Bright Shiny Morning’. The fun facts in the book, and excerpted by the WSJ include the number of people in Los Angeles with the legal name of ‘Jesus Christ’, that there is more pornography produced in Los Angeles than in the rest of the world combined, and that about 100,000 women in LA County get boob jobs every year.
For all of that, though, the people I talked to in Los Angeles don’t seem as pumped up about the boook as others. Besides, there’s only so much you can write about one city, even if there are a lot many things to do in Los Angeles. Once he runs out of all things LA, what’s he gonna do? Well, he could always write a book about how easy it is to climb Mt. Everest, or about his journey to the North Pole. That should be easy, considering his past history.
San Diego Union Tribune reports that there’s a baby grey whale on the loose in San Diego Bay. The whale, estimated to be 10 to 20 feet long, was spotted by a few boaters about 1:30 p.m. near the USS Midway, said Coast Guard Petty Officer Brian Ramirez. Seems the lil feller is currently playing hide and seek with the Coast Guard.
Moving from fishy baby whales to halibut fishing, Tom Stienstra, San Francisco Chronicle, cites excellent conditions for Halibut fishing in the Bay, and adds to that with a great primer including rules, contacts and info on how to rig for halibut. What we have now is the makings of a landmark season. Anglers on boats have been averaging about two legal halibut per rod (lower when the wind is up), plus about five shakers for every keeper over the 22-inch minimum size limit. At Loch Lomond Harbor in San Rafael, 40-pounders were weighed in on back-to-back days, the first time that’s ever happened.
