Paul McCartney has had a mixed last few years, having been married to Heather Mills, and then going through a very messy, very public divorce.
While all of this was going on, he was still writing and recording music, and released Memory Almost Full in 2007.
The album has already sold 100,000 copies in the UK, but now everyone who wants a copy can do so for free, as it’s being given away with every copy of The Mail On Sunday tomorrow, May 18th.
The give-away was announced a couple of weeks ago, and I first read the news on fellow b5 blog The Beatles Invasion. I decided to wait until now to tell of my readers so that they wouldn’t forget about it and miss out on their copy.
This isn’t the first time The Mail On Sunday has given away a full album for free, with Planet Earth by Prince available via the newspaper back in July of last year.
This is also just the latest in a series of music freebies from British artists, with Coldplay giving Violet Hill, from new album Viva La Vida away as a free download, and Radiohead offering their In Rainbows album as an almost free download late last year.
So what is in it for McCartney? The album has probably done all of the business it’s going to do now in the UK, with his fans snapping it up in the first few months of it’s release. But this give-away will mean the album gets in the hands of another 2 million people, all who then may buy other material from the former Beatles singer.
This is also a brilliant public relations coup, something which McCartney could certainly do with after the whole Heather Mills business. The fact that a man worth £800 million is giving away an album shouldn’t really be seen as that impressive, but a freebie is still a freebie.
I’ll be buying a copy of The Mail tomorrow for the album - will you?
