◎简　　介　
在濑户内海的仓桥岛上，有一对运石为生的夫妇——精一和民子，他们与两个孩子光子和刚，以及父亲仙造过着虽不富裕但平和安稳的日子。最近，精一陷入了烦恼，运石船的引擎出现了问题。他想买条新船，却筹不到足够的钱；由于船体老化，如果单单更换引擎，根本不能彻底解决问题。夫妻两人只能驾着破船继续出海，每天家人和朋友们都提心吊胆地等待他们回家。在弟弟健次的建议下，精一偕妻到尾道的造船厂参观，从此，两人决定放弃运石的生活，离开仓桥岛去尾道谋生。夫妻俩带着刚最后一次坐上运石船出海，回忆起许多美好的往事。第二天，一家人出发离岛，街坊好友皆来送行，大家洒泪而别。
这是一部情节平淡、画面朴实的作品，却承载着时代变革的大背景和沉重丰沛的情感。片中的主人公是濑户内海岛上的普通家庭，旧运石船出现问题，成为他们离开故乡追求新生活的契机。20世纪70年代，正值日本开始进入高速发展期，传统的低效率劳作，被使用新技术新机械的生产方式所代替，剧中人的遭遇正是这一时代背景的体现。影片最后，人们含泪告别的场面颇为动人。然而导演的意图并不在于仅仅描绘对故乡的依恋之情，而是展现出了。
