Nickelback… even the mere mention of the name of this band inspires boredom, irritation and annoyance in my head. This is of course due to that You Remind Me song, which is still played on radio stations far too much.
The song was bad enough, but then when I saw the video for the first time, only to be faced with Chad Kroeger’s fat, ugly head and grotesque comedy beard, I knew the end was nigh.
So these days I approach any new Nickelback song from a distance, and with all my weapons of taste and choice ready and armed.
I have to admit, this song Rockstar isn’t actually that bad… almost veering towards being (shock horror) good! Oh no, there I said it. And the video is quite cool too, although not without its problems.
Don’t get me wrong, I still find the band’s blend of monotony and uninventiveness completely soul destroying, and I won’t be rushing out to buy their album any time soon, but one good song is still a good song.
Chad’s voice is croaky and annoying, but the song, and lyrics is still strong despite all this. The video deserves some credit too, as despite being a simple concept, it works extremely well.
There are a host of ordinary, and well known people in the video, and it all blends together really well. My only criticism would be having a stereotyped Englishman involved… I live here, and no-one looks like that any more.
