Philip K. Dick

Since Ridley Scott turned "Do Android's Dream of Electric Sheep?" into the science fiction classic Blade Runner, seven of Philip K. Dick's novels or short stories have made their way to the big screen including  Minority Report and Total Recall. Maligned and misunderstood in its day, "Blade Runner" established much of the aesthetic that defines cinematic sci-fi, from the movie's wet-streets, neon-and-steam look to the stark, pessimistic tone that foreshadowed the cyberpunk genre.

Dick novels explored sociological and political themes in novels dominated by monopolistic corporations and authoritarian governments. In his later works, Dick drew upon his own life experiences and addressed the nature of drug use, paranoia and schizophrenia, and religious experience and theology in novels such as A Scanner Darkly and VALIS. Dick, who died during the filming of Blade Runner, eventually became paranoid, imagining plots against him by the KGB and FBI.

Dicks films have generated over $1 billion in world-wide box office and ancillary revenue -the result of combining his visionary stories with talent from the world's premier film directors and stars, including Steven Spielberg, Arnold Schwarzenegger, Tom Cruise, John Woo, Ben Affleck, Harrison Ford and Keanu Reeves are a few associated with these projects.
