
Taimu Mountain is situated within Fuding City, northeast of Fujian Province and near east LONG. 120 and north LAT. 27.It stands firm on the bank of East Sea, three sides facing sea and one side close to mountain. Taimu Mountain is famous for its precipitous mountains, odd rocks, bizarre caves, beautiful mist and rapid waterfalls. The height of its highest peak is 917.30m.Climbing tiptop, looking East Sea as far as you can, you will find water flowing to horizon, apices extruding from sea and Tianmu Mountain deserved the famous title of "Grand Sight of Mountain and Sea". Taimu Mountain forms three rival tops together with Yandang Mountain near its north, Wuyi Mountain close to its west. Taimu Mountain as a sea coign is less famous than the other two mountains with many and broad roads. Fujianese name Taimu and Wuyi Mountains "Two Superexcellences" and Zhejiangnese take Taimu and Yandang Mountains as "Two Brothers" with extreme insight. The total area is about 300 square kilometers, 92 of which are for tourism. It has five big scenery areas, including Taimu Kop, Nine-carp Brooks & Waterfalls, Fine Plain at Sea Shore, Mulberry Garden & Jade Green Lake and Blessing & Fairy Islands as well as other two single sites, Chilly Town & Ancient Castle and Lucky Cloud Temple. It has abundant natural and man-made sights.
According to survey by geologic sector, Taimu rocks are coarse grained granite in the late Yanshan period, or Mesozoic-the Cretaceous Period of geologic history, early beyond present about 90 to 100 million years. Because crustal alteration resulted in ocean ascending and three sets of vertical joints growth each other in east, west, south, north and nearly horizontal directions, Taimu Mountain was sculpted vertically and horizontally interlaced barrancas, peaks and caves. After denudation by winds and rains and scour by flowing water over extra thousands and millions years, Taimu Mountain formed present abrupt rare peaks and odd rocks.
Taimu Mountain was being dramatic prosperity in Tang and Song Dynasties. There were thirty six temples in its south and north, among which the Temples of Country Prosperity, Lucky Cloud, Efficacious Peak, Musa Basjoo and Heavenly Kings were with greatest scales. Nowadays, there are 360 stone poles on the site of Country Prosperity Temple, Unlivable Tower and Stone Pool ahead of the temple. You could image how grand it was. Jade Lake Nunnery was ever Zhu Xi’s grass house, a philosopher and educator in Song Dynasty, and Xuanji Cave ever his retirement site. There are several decades giant stone inscriptions left by famous men in past dynasties, like “the 1st Mountain”, “Grand Sight of Mountain and Sea”, “Tao’s Wonderland & Buddha’s Holy Land” and so on. Qing Island Town on the foot of Taimu Mountain was one of heroic positions to resist coastal enemies in Ming Dynasty in Fujian Province and named “Immortal & Heroic Town”.
