FreedomSpeaks is a new network that lets you get all worked up for your favorite political causes–and then take action. The site is designed as a hub for interest groups, individuals and politicians to work together in order to create letters that are in fact sent off to the head honchos in our elected political seats.
FreedomSpeaks does some of the heavy lifting for you, in providing the necessary contact information for the people that you’ll need to address, if you want to get anything done in your district. If anything, FreedomSpeaks is helpful in the fact that it provides the necessary details for knowing who’s in charge for your region. That’s something most people don’t know–from the alderman to your judges.
From there, FreedomSpeaks is also a network, where you can see active users, see what causes get them worked up, and what letters they’re working on. You can start your own letter, contribute to another, or leave comments of your own. And as with most political networks, you can add friends and foes as well.
There’s not much user-generated content on FreedomSpeaks outside of the letters that are shared on the site, so most of the networking will revolve around these letters and the discussions occurring amongst users. The good thing about having foes on political networks is that you can easily keep track of any ongoing arguments and positions you’ll need to defend. There aren’t, however, any RSS options or obvious Facebook-like feeds for easily keeping track of other users’ activity.
Now that politics have firmly established their roots into the web and social media, will we see an effective and far-reaching effect as a result of networks like FreedomSpeaks? Others, like Jott, are looking to take advantage of the web and other connected devices to drive people to action.
