For anyone who doesn’t know about it by now, the Fall for Dance Festival is a two-week series that takes place every September, at City Center, and has a notable entry fee: ten dollars a seat, every seat. City Center was once a Shirners auditorium. After our municipality bought it, for back taxes, in 1943, Mayor LaGuardia proposed to turn it into a “people’s theatre.” And when Arlene Shuler, City Center’s current president, founded Fall for Dance, in 2004, her goal was to return to that mandate. The shows are pitched at people new to dance, so there’s a lot of variety: four to five companies a night. You won’t get dead-assed by something you don’t like, or not for longer than twenty minutes. And the troupes tend to do their most audience-friendly works. The festival sells out every night, so if you want to go you have to indicate that, by phone (212-581-1212), on the Web (http://www.nycitycenter.org/), or at the box office, immediately after the tickets go on sale—this year, on September 7 at 11 A.M.
