As we know, translation is a representation or recreation in one language of what is written or spoken in another language.

Strictly speaking, translation is a kind of science because it has a whole set of rules governing it and certain objective laws to go by in the process of translating just as other sciences do. From an artistic point of view, translation is also an art, a bilingual art, for in translation, certain skills and techniques should be employed in order to attain clearness of style, and smoothness in language. Whether a work of translation is good or bad, readable or not, it has nothing to do with translation itself, but depends on the artistic level and technique of the translator. Therefore, we may draw a conclusion now, translation is not only a science with its own laws and methods but also an art of reproduction and recreation.

      我们知道，翻译是用一种语言再现或再创作用另一种语言所表达的东西，包括口头的和书面的两种。严格地说，翻译是一门科学，因为翻译也像其它的科学一样有一整套原则和一些客观规律，在翻译时译者应遵循这些原则和规律。从艺术的角度来看，翻译又是一门艺术，一种双语的艺术。因为在翻译时，译者要做到译文明白和通顺，就要使用某些技巧。无论一件译作是好还是不好，可读还是不可读，这跟翻译本身毫无联系，它取决于译者的艺术水平和翻译技艺的高下。因此，我们可以得出结论，翻译不仅是一门科学，有其自身的规律和方法；而且是一门艺术，一门再创造的艺术。
