Fort Tryon Park, New York

Don't think you can't venture off the beaten path in crowded New York City. Deep in a wooded park near Manhattan's northern tip is The Cloisters Museum and Gardens, one of the city's most fascinating attractions.

A branch of the Metropolitan Museum of Art, The Cloisters Museum and Gardens is the country's only museum that is devoted exclusively to the art and architecture of medieval Europe. Surrounded by medieval gardens, five monastery-inspired buildings—with stone arches, columns and other elements from actual medieval structures—house a Romanesque chapel, statuary and crucifixes, a 12th-century apse brought from Spain, and hundreds of other rarities. Best known of these are the magnificent "Unicorn Tapestries" woven circa 1495–1505.

If the tranquil museum is an escape from the clamor of America's largest city, so is its location: a 66-acre park overlooking the shimmering Hudson River.

Open Tues.–Sun. except major winter holidays. Admission charged.
