There are certain food products that many people buy and store in their cabinets for future use. You want to have it available to you so that when the time comes that you want or need to use it you won’t have to run out to get it. It seems safe enough. It can be stored in your cabinet and doesn’t have to be refrigerated. The worst that you can imagine happening is it going stale. But even that seems unlikely given the product. What is it, you wonder? It’s pancake mix.
We all do it. We buy it in bulk or when it is on sale and stick it in our cabinet. That way when the craving strikes or unexpected company arrives, we are prepared. But what you may not know is that pancake mix that has sat too long will grow mold. It will not be evident by appearance. However it will be by the taste. Unfortunately, tasting usually means you have ingested it. And for someone that is allergic to mold, this could prove fatal. In fact, old pancake mix has caused the death of at least one unsuspecting young person with an allergy to mold.
To avoid this tragedy from striking you or those you love, empty your cabinets of pancake mixes that are passed the acceptable freshness date. Although the risk is small and is only dangerous to those with a mold allergy, the risk still exists. This isn’t to say that this will occur with every box that has passed its stamped time. Only the boxes that have grown actual mold spores should pose a danger. But if you have someone in your house with an allergy, don’t take the risk. Get rid of the stale pancake mix.
