原文: in the palm of your hand

In amongst the daily tasks of business, I have a singular goal: to fit consumer virtual worlds in the palm of your hand.

That is the challenge. Virtual world should not just mean massive and multiplayer. That is the question. Can you boil the essence of virtual worlds down to something light and small, and still preserve, if not enhance, the value?

The essence to me has never been about 3D visualization. It has always been about human communication.

A fundamental test for us, and this whole industry, is the power of avatar to avatar communication. I believe that human psychology and culture makes us steer clear of audio and video interaction as a broad form of communication with strangers and casual acquaintances (that might change generationally, but not quickly). Avatar communication has the potential to change that, and this potential defines the potential of our fledgling industry. The other market test is human desire for realtime communication, in addition to asynchronous modes.

I’ve written this before, and will say it again: we have to get the technology out of the way. We have to lead with purpose and simplicity. That is the task. That is the challenge.
