Healthy eating habits are learned right from the beginning. Here are some tips for teaching your child.
No television while eating. If your baby is busy watching TV more than you he isn’t really paying attention to eating and won’t realize when he is full. So keep the TV off and focus on what you are feeding them.
Put something in your baby’s hands. If you put a spoon in his hand to hold, eventually he will put the spoon into his food on his own.
Don’t bring toys to the table. They can’t concentrate on the food if they are busy stacking blocks. Keep toys out of sight while you are feeding them.
Don’t let your child graze all day. I am guilty of this one and it is a very hard habit to break. Children need snacks but there should be regular mealtimes too.
Don’t push your child to eat. Don’t worry that you are underfeeding your child. Pay attention to the signals that they are giving you. If your child turns their head away they are probably full. (Note: It doesn’t take long for them to get full.)
Don’t feel rushed. Slow down and enjoy the process.
