THE controversial kangaroo cull at a Canberra Department of Defence site has ended with more than 500 of the animals killed.
A Defence spokesman said the cull was finished and had been conducted in the most humane way possible. He said 514 of the eastern grey kangaroos were euthanased at the former naval station during the two-week operation.
The carcasses have been removed and disposed of at another Defence site nearby.
"The cull was undertaken in the most humane manner possible under the guidance of animal management experts, including the RSPCA, and was compliant with the code of practice for the humane destruction of kangaroos in the ACT," the Defence spokesman said.
ACT RSPCA chief executive Michael Linke said Defence had released the RSPCA inspectors from their monitoring duties at the site late last week.
Mr Linke said he was satisfied with the way the cull was carried out and that there had been few incidents of concern.
The kangaroos were killed by lethal injection after being tranquillised by darts. However, the cull drew international condemnation from animal rights activists, including former Beatle Paul McCartney. More than 10 protesters were arrested.
