In this week’s magazine, John Updike writes about the makeup artist Max Factor, whose work in Hollywood transformed the beauty industry. “For the sake of love, broadly speaking, American women in the early twentieth century, overcoming Puritan scruples enforced by male employers, husbands, editorial writers, and legislators, began to paint themselves,” Updike writes. Here is a portfolio of Max Factor advertisements, from the nineteen-forties to the sixties.
